A fire broke out at a ready-made garment factory in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Monday.

No casualties were reported.

The fire occurred at about 12:15pm at Ayesha Garments, a unit of the Palmal Group, near Fantasy Kingdom in the Jamgora area on Tongi–Ashulia–EPZ road, officials said.

Workers said that smoke was first seen on the second floor before the flames spread to other parts of the building.

More than 4,000 workers were working on different floors of the factory when the fire broke out. They were immediately evacuated, witnesses said.

‘Firefighting units from Zirabo and DEPZ stations rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the news,’ Md Talha Bin Jasim, station officer at the Fire Service media cell, said.

Nine firefighting units worked to contain the flames, he said and added that the fire was brought under control minutes after 2:00pm.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.

The officials, however, suspected that the fire occurred due to an electrical short circuit.
