Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian on Wednesday appeared before the Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-5 to explain how the accused in the case of killing a judge鈥檚 son in the city managed to speak to the media while in police custody.

The commissioner, dressed in plain clothes, arrived there minutes before 10:00am and stood in the dock.

He stayed there for around 15 minutes.

His lawyer, Jamshed Ali, submitted a written explanation to the court.

He also submitted a petition seeking the RMP chief鈥檚 exemption from a miscellaneous case filed over the incident, said public prosecutor Ali Ashraf Masum.

He said that judge Ashiqur Rahman accepted the petition and kept the order pending, fixing December 1 for the next hearing.

In his written explanation, the commissioner stated that after the arrest of Limon Mia, 34, he was kept under police guard at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where a crowd had gathered, and that Limon spoke to media crews taking advantage of the situation.

The court was informed that the police personnel responsible for guarding Limon at the hospital had already been suspended for negligence of duty.

Limon is accused of killing Tawshif Rahman Suman, 16, son of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman, and attempting to murder the judge鈥檚 wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, after entering their residence on November 13.

While in custody at the hospital, Limon gave statements before television cameras in which he attempted to shift blame onto the victims.

The footage circulated widely on social media, prompting the court to summon the police commissioner.
