Arson and petrol bomb attacks by unidentified people continued on Wednesday, with two incidents occurring on the day鈥攐ne in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of the capital, and the other in Mymensingh.
The attackers hurled a petrol bomb at a Grameen Bank branch office in Dhamrai and a compartment of a train in Mymensingh on the day, officials said.
A series of crude bomb explosions and arson attacks on vehicles, especially buses, have taken place in Dhaka and several other areas since the night of November 7, after the Awami League, the activities of which are currently banned, had announced protests on social media centering the International Crimes Tribunal鈥檚 verdict in a case of crimes against humanity against deposed prime minister and the party president Sheikh Hasina.
The tribunal聽on November 17 sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death, while former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received a reduced sentence of five years in the case for committing atrocities during the July uprising that ousted the AL regime on August 5, 2024.
The Awami League on November 17 again announced through social media to enforce programmes across the country to protest at the verdict against the party chief.
In Dhamrai, unidentified miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a Grameen Bank branch office in the Suapur Bazar area under Dhamrai upazila at about 4:30am on Wednesday, 抖阴精品 JU correspondent, referring to the police, reported.
Two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle there and threw a petrol bomb at the building, which struck a wall and ignited a fire at an adjacent house, said a night guard, Selim Mia, who was on duty in the area then.
Dhamrai police station officer-in-charge Monirul Islam said that they were trying to identify the people involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants set fire to a compartment of the Jaria local train at Mymensingh Railway Station early Wednesday, damaging parts of some seats, while a gunpowder-like substance was found scattered on others, 抖阴精品 correspondent in the district reported.
The attackers fled the scene when Ansar members chased them.
The members of the railway security force managed to bring the blaze under control within minutes, Mymensingh Railway Station superintendent Abdullah Al Harun said.
Since November 7, at least 40 crude bombs have exploded and at least 30 vehicles have been set on fire in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
