Three people were arrested and several firearms recovered in a series of raids conducted by the Chattogram district police early Wednesday in Chattogram.
The arrestees were identified as Zohir Ahmed, 52, Md Sakibul Islam, 22, and Md Rana, 45. All of them are residents of Noapara union at Raozan upazila of Chattogram.
The information was disclosed at a press briefing by additional superintendent of police (media) Mohammad Rasel at the Chattogram district police superintendent鈥檚 office in the port city鈥檚 at about 11:30am on Wednesday.
The police said that a raid was launched at about midnight at Chowdhuryhat under Noapara union at Raozan, where a team detained grocery shopkeeper Zohir Ahmed. Zohir later produced a foreign-made pistol and two magazines loaded with two rounds of bullets, which was hidden inside the shop.
Based on his information, a team of the Detective Branch and Raozan and Patiya police stations arrested Sakibul and Rana from Patiya鈥檚 Haidgaon Maizpara area with firearms.
Rasel said that the coordinated raids were part of an intensified drive against illegal firearms in the district. Illegal weapons pose a serious threat to public safety, and such operations will continue, the police official said.
He also said that in November, five cases were filed under the Arms Act at Raozan and eight suspects were arrested. The police also recovered 16 firearms, eight locally made weapons, 75 rounds of bullets and 24 cartridges in different operations.
