
Two women died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours till 8:00am on Saturday in the country and four others were infected.
One of them died in Chattogram and the other in Khulna, reports a Directorate General of Health Services press release.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Chattogram reported that an elderly woman died of Covid-19 in the city, marking the second virus-related fatality reported in the district within a week.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, civil surgeon of Chattogram, confirmed on Saturday that 71-year-old Fazilatunnesa, a resident of the Bakalia area, passed away on Friday while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Chattogram General Hospital.
‘She was suffering from lung cancer and was admitted to the hospital three days ago after testing positive for Covid-19,’ Jahangir Alam said.
Earlier, on June 16, the civil surgeon’s office reported the death of 75-year-old Shafiul Islam, a resident of Jorarganj in Mirsharai upazila. He was battling post-surgical complications and kidney disease when he succumbed to Covid.
According to the civil surgeon’s daily report released on Saturday, six new covid-19 cases were detected in the last 24 hours in the district. A total of 71 samples were tested across six public and private hospitals and diagnostic centres during this period.
Since June 10, when the civil surgeon’s office first confirmed the virus’s re-emergence, Chattogram has reported 62 Covid-19 cases, with 55 from the city and the remainder from various upazilas.
Chattogram General Hospital was designated as the district’s dedicated Covid-19 treatment facility following the initial outbreak. Though ICU beds were made available early on, the facility initially lacked ventilators. Eventually, three ventilators were installed, and a five-bed ICU unit was set up for treating critical Covid patients.
In Khulna, a woman aged between 41 and 50 died in a private hospital in the city.
The DGHS confirmed that including the latest, so far 11 people died of Covid this year and 397 people were infected in the country.
Coronavirus was first detected in the country on March 8, 2020.
So far, 29,510 people have died of the disease in the country, according to the official account with the cumulative number of Covid-19 patients reaching 20,51,942.
