
Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad on Tuesday announced a month-long programme, marking the one-year anniversary of the July uprising that overthrew the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime.
The student organisation said that the programme would pay tribute to the uprising martyrs, recall key moments of the movement, pray for the recovery of the injured, and exchange greetings with citizens who supported the uprising.
The announcement came at a press conference held at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen in the afternoon with central member secretary Zahid Ahasan declaring the event schedule.
At the press conference the organisation’s spokesperson Ashrefa Khatun said that their aim was to establish July uprising as part of the country’s cultural, social and political life.
Zahid Hasan said, ‘We saw how people confronted bullets with their chest bare. We believe those who became martyrs entrusted us with responsibilities.’
He said that the programmes would be observed from July 1 to August 5, referred to symbolically as July 36.
As per the announced schedule, the programme will feature a discussion titled ‘Brave Journalists’ Association: diaries of the uprising with Dhaka University Journalists’ Association’ to be held on July 4; honouring journalists, rights activists and professionals who played roles in the uprising to be held on July 7; ‘Meeting with Kin’ week scheduled for July 7–14 the events of which would include visits to the martyrs’ graves and meetings with families of the injured; a women-led event titled ‘Darkness Dispelled by Women’s Leadership’ to be held on July 14; ‘Women’s Carnival’ on July 15; Dhaka University Resistance Days to be held in July 16–17; dialogue with private university student activists on July 18; ‘July 36 Inter-University Cricket Tournament’ from July 18 to 25; exchange meeting with madrassah students on July 21; and honouring organisations that worked on the July uprising on July 23.
Other programmes include a celebration with street children, rickshaw-pullers and workers who joined the uprising on July 25; nationwide graffiti painting on July 26; July Exhibition from July 31 to August 5 at Mall Chattar, Curzon Hall and TSC; a ‘Flag Move’ on August 3; and the final Victory March on August 5.
