Metro rail services on the entire Uttara-Motijheel route in the capital Dhaka resumed on Thursday after service disruption due to operational complications in the Farmgate area in the previous day.
The services were suspended on the Shahbagh-Agargaon section from 9:15pm to 10:30pm on Wednesday as trains were facing jerks at the Farmgate point.
Md Ahsan Ullah Sharifi, deputy project director (public relations) of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, the implementing agency of the metro rail system, said that metro trains had started to run on their usual schedule since Thursday morning.
Retired Brigadier General Md Abdul Wohab, director of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-6), told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that due to issues related to the operations of trains near the location where recently a bearing pad had fallen, metro rail services had been suspended on Wednesday night.
At about 9:15pm on Wednesday, jerking on the track between the Farmgate and Agargaon sections led to the suspension, said Sharifi.
However, trains on the Agargaon-Uttara and Motijheel-Shahbagh sections ran as per the usual schedule on Wednesday night, officials added.
Due to the disruption in services, passengers suffered immensely on Wednesday night as many could not reach their destinations by the metro trains.
Earlier, on October 26, metro rail services remained halted for 23 hours on the Shahbagh-Bijoy Sarani section following a fatal incident involving the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a bearing pad that had fallen from a metro pier.
Services resumed on the Uttara-Agargaon section after two and a half hours, and on the Motijheel-Shahbagh section after seven hours on that day.
The location where the bearing pad fell on October 26, Pier 433, is near the entrance of the Farmgate metro station.
This incident follows a similar occurrence in 2024, when a bearing pad fell from Pier 430.
A probe committee formed by the road transport and bridges ministry in this connection is working to submit a report within two weeks from the accident.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the DMTCL reassured passengers about the safety of its services.
It said that all metro trains were being operated in compliance with safety rules and regulations while passengers were requested not to be concerned about safety.
The services of the country’s first 20.1-kilometre-long metro rail system were inaugurated on December 28, 2022 on the Uttara-Agargaon section in Dhaka. The route was extended up to Motijheel in November 2023.
