Situation in Khagrachari became visibly stable on Sunday as the district administration on Saturday night lifted Section 144 imposed amid violence over protests against the alleged rape of Marma schoolgirl.

The restriction was lifted eight days after violence engulfed Khagrachari town and later the district’s Guimara upazila where three Marma youths were killed and dozens, including the army and police personnel, were injured.

The announcement of lifting Section 144 came in a media statement signed by deputy commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandker at about 9:00 on Saturday.

Similarly, Section 144 was also withdrawn from Guimara by upazila nirbahi officer Irene Akter, according to another statement.

Jumma Chhatra Janata, a platform of the national minority people protesting at the rape, also announced the withdrawal of its blockade through a press release issued by its media cell on Saturday.

Their protests and enforcement of blockades across Khagrachari district escalated into clashes, forcing the authorities to impose Section 144 on September 27.

The situation worsened on September 28 when violence occurred at places, killing three Marma young men and injuring dozens, including army and police personnel, at Ramsu Bazar in Guimara.

Three case were filed over the violence and killings with the Guimara and Khagrachari Sadar police on October 1.

The Marma schoolgirl was allegedly raped while she was returning from private tuition in Singinala area of Khagrachari Sadar on September 23.

A case was filed against three unidentified people and the police have so far arrested a suspect, Shayan Shil, who was sent to jail on Wednesday after completion of six-day remand.

A medical board appointed by the government found ‘no signs of rape’ as its member physicians had examined the alleged victim Marma schoolgirl, according to the board’s report.

Jumma Chhatra Janata termed the report ‘fabricated’.
