The police had yet not been able to detain or arrest anyone in two days of filing three cases over the recent violence in Khagrachari’s Sadar and Guimara upazilas that left three Marma youths dead following protests over rape of a Marma schoolgirl.
Also Section 144 imposed by the district administration remained in force in Khagrachari municipality, Sadar and Guimara upazila as of 7:30pm Friday.
Khagrachari superintendent of police Md Arefin Jewel told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Friday evening that no one was arrested in the cases so far.
‘No arrest could not be made yet as the cases were filed against unidentified accused. We are conducting primary questioning of the residents of the affected areas to identify the perpetrators,’ he said.
Of the cases, two were filed with the Guimara police over the killing of three people during the clashes and obstructing government duties, injuring officials, vandalism and arson.
Another case was filed with the Khagrachari Sadar police for violence and obstruction of government duties during the unrest.
Although Section 144 remained in force in Khagrachari Sadar and Guimara, vehicular and public movement became normal since Thursday with crowds seen at the weekly market, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Khagrachari reported.
SP Arefin said that the situation became normal, but the restriction was still in force on Friday as the administration was still monitoring the situation.
‘The situation is normal and stable now. Hopefully, Section 144 would be lifted soon,’ he added.
Protests erupted on September 24 when national minority people under the banner of Jumma Chhatra Janata (students and people of the hill ethnic communities) called for justice for the Marma schoolgirl, who was allegedly raped while she was returning from private tuition in Singinala area of Khagrachari Sadar on September 23.
Their protests and enforcement of blockades across Khagrachari district escalated into clashes, forcing the authorities to impose Section 144 on September 27.
The situation worsened on September 28 when violence occurred at places, killing three Marma individuals and injuring dozens, including army and police personnel, at Ramsu Bazar in Guimara.
A case was filed against three unidentified people and the police have so far arrested a suspect, Shayan Shil, who was sent to jail on Wednesday after completion of six-day remand.
A medical board appointed by the government, meanwhile, found ‘no signs of rape’ as its member physicians had examined the Marma schoolgirl, who was allegedly raped in Khagrachari, according to the board’s report.
Jumma Chhatra Janata termed the report ‘fabricated’.
