The police have detained 50 people on charges of organising and participating in a flash procession held by the Awami League, activities of which are now banned, in Cumilla city.

The police arrested them during a special operation conducted from Friday night to Saturday.

According to the Cumilla police, the drive was part of a broader initiative to maintain public safety and curb anti-state activities.

Citing statements from the detained, the police said that Cumilla metropolitan Awami League president and former MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar, north district Awami League general secretary Rawshan Ali Master, and several leaders of the AL currently living abroad had allegedly sent funds to local associates to organise brief flash processions with the aim of destabilising the government.

Law enforcement sources claimed that participants were reportedly paid up to Tk 10,000 each to take part in 50-second-long processions.

The police added that many participants travelled from outside areas using microbuses and CNG-run vehicles, while others who had been influenced through social media also joined the activity.

Cumilla DB police officer-in-charge Md Abdullah said, ‘Strict legal action is being taken against those involved in anti-state activities. Our main goal is to ensure public safety and prevent chaos.’
