Jumma Chhatra Janata on Saturday announced a complete withdrawal of its blockade in Khagrachari over the rape of a Marma schoolgirl.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the platform’s media cell on its official Facebook page.

The protests and enforcement of blockade across Khagrachari district escalated into clashes, killing three Marma men and injuring dozens, including army and police personnel, at Ramsu Bazar in Guimara on September 28.

Section 144 imposed by the district administration on September 27, however, remained in force in Khagrachari municipality, Sadar and Guimara upazilas as of 6:00pm on Saturday.

The release said, ‘We have taken this decision considering religious rituals for the martyrs, providing humanitarian support to the injured and affected, and partially taking into account the assurances given by the administration.’

Jumma Chhatra Janata said that they had held the second round of talks on October 1 with the district council chairman, Khagrachari deputy commissioner, representatives of the police and military intelligence department regarding violence perpetrated centring the protests at the rape.

‘In the meeting, we clearly presented our eight-point demand, including withdrawal of Section 144 and exemplary punishment for the killings. The administration assured us of addressing the demands and said Tk 50,000 would be given to the martyrs’ families each,’ the statement read.

The platform threatened a tougher movement in the future if the eight-point demand was not met.

Although Section 144 remained in force in Khagrachari Sadar and Guimara, vehicular and public movement became normal since Thursday with crowds seen at the weekly market, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Khagrachari reported.

Khagrachari deputy commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandker said that the situation became normal, but the restrictions were still in force on Friday as the administration was still monitoring the situation.

‘A decision regarding the imposed Section 144 would be made soon,’ he added.

Three cases over the violence and killings of the three Marma youths were filed with the Guimara and Sadar police on Wednesday.

The Marma schoolgirl was allegedly raped while she was returning from private tuition in Singinala area of Khagrachari Sadar on September 23.

A case was filed against three unidentified people and the police have so far arrested a suspect, Shayan Shil, who was sent to jail on Wednesday after completion of six-day remand.

A medical board appointed by the government, meanwhile, found ‘no signs of rape’ as its member physicians had examined the Marma schoolgirl, who was allegedly raped in Khagrachari, according to the board’s report.

Jumma Chhatra Janata termed the report ‘fabricated’.
