A construction worker tragically died Friday night after a fall from the eighth floor of a residential building under construction at Jahangirnagar University in Savar, authorities said.

The deceased, identified as Rakib, 26, was working on the ‘Further Development of Jahangirnagar University’ project in the university’s Bishmail area when the incident occurred.

According to witnesses, at about 6:20 pm on Friday, Rakib, while carrying a sack filled with construction debris, lost his balance as he attempted to dump it through an open window, causing him to fall along with the sack onto a pile of waste below.

He suffered severe injuries to his head and backbone.

After being informed by co-workers, the site foreman told Rakib’s brother, a fellow worker, to take him to Islamiya Hospital in Savar.

Doctors there referred him to Enam Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where he was declared dead by a duty doctor at about 7:30 pm.

The construction firm sent the body of Rakib, a native of Chapainawabganj district, to his home village and provided an initial Tk 2 lakh for funeral and related expenses. The firm also pledged to cover any additional required costs.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Mahfuzur Rahman issued a condolence statement expressing profound sorrow over the worker’s death, which he described as a ‘tragic and irreparable loss’ for his family. He extended his sincere condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the departed soul.

Following the incident, the university convened an emergency administrative meeting. Authorities decided to suspend all construction work above the first floor across campus until standard safety nets and belt platforms for material transport are installed.

A three-member investigation committee has been formed to probe whether negligence or safety lapses were involved. The university authority also said that appropriate action would be taken based on the committee’s findings.

Meanwhile, a group of students demonstrated on the campus on Saturday afternoon, protesting against construction works without proper security arrangements.
