
Bangladesh’s export performance in telecommunication and information services dropped by 6.34 per cent in July-March period of the 2023-24 financial year to $477.06 million, according to data published by the Export Promotion Bureau.
The total export performance in telecommunication and information services during the July-March period of the previous financial year was $509.86 million.
The export performance during this period also failed to meet the strategic target set by the government for exporting telecommunication and information services during this period, which was $636.49 million dollars, the data showed.
Export earnings from the telecommunication services dropped by 25.04 per cent to $69.60 million while earnings from computer services, including software, data processing and consultancy, dropped by 2.33 per cent to $407.07 million in the first nine months of FY24.
Total export earnings from the information services increased by 77.27 per cent during this period to reach $0.39 million.
The total exports from telecommunication services during the same period in the previous financial year were $92.85 million, while that from computer services in the previous year was $416.79 million.
Telecommunication and maintenance service exports dropped by 24.71 per cent to $28.40 million and exports of International Gateway services dropped by 24.64 per cent to $40.92 million while that of bandwidth services increased by 647.62 per cent to $6.28 million.
Software exports dropped by 25 per cent to reach $28.6 million while computer consultancy services dropped by 45 per cent to $14 million.
However, earnings from IT-enabled services increased by 4.64 per cent to reach $361.30 million in the reporting period.
Rasel T Ahmed, president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the decline in export earnings was mostly due to recent global events.
‘Surge of artificial intelligence-use worldwide also impacted the IT export earnings in this period. We should make strategies for the future about our IT sector in order to improve,’ he said.
Another reason for the decline in IT export earnings, the BASIS president said, was that some bills were still to be paid. He said that after the bills were paid, the earning data would rise up a little bit.
