Leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday called on the interim government to hold dialogue with all political parties to ensure a level playing field before the next general election.
They made the demand in a rally organised by Dhaka City units of the party at Bijoynagar crossing in the city.
The rally was organised demanding the implementation of the July Charter and ensuring a level playing field before the next general election, likely to be held in February next year.
The Dhaka South City unit of Jamaat, Nurul Islam Bulbul, chaired the rally.
Jamaat nayeb-e-amir Sayed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said in the rally that the people of the country were eagerly waiting to cast their votes in the next general election in a free, fair and credible manner.
They would not allow any farcical general election like that held during the Awami League regime, he said.
He called on the interim government to start dialogue with the political parties for holding the next general election in a free, fair and credible manner.
He also called on the pro-July uprising political parties to start dialogues to ensure people’s voting rights.
Referring to a survey report that claimed that 71 per cent of the people wanted a proportional representation system in the next general election, Taher said that the voting rights of the people would be ensured if the system was followed.
The party’s joint secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan said that Jamaat would continue its movement for a free, fair and credible general election.
Jamaat central leaders Abdul Halim, Mobarak Hossain, and Selim Uddin, among others, also spoke.
The rally was followed by a procession that ended at Shahbagh crossing.
