Thirty-two citizens in a statement on Thursday said that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami must admit that it played a role against the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

They said that the party played an anti-liberation role and also took part in atrocities with the then Pakistani army during the liberation war.

‘Now Jamaat should take part in politics of Bangladesh after apologising for its role in the liberation war,’ they said.

The signatories to the statement include academics Azfar Hussain, GH Habib, Saima Alam and Golam Sarwar, artist Debashish Chakraborty, writer Rakhal Raha, signer Bithi Ghosh and writer Salah Uddin Shuvro, among others.
