
Politicians, freedom fighters and professionals on Wednesday at a condolence meeting said that the nation would remember freedom fighter Mostafa Mohsin Montu for his role in restoring democratic rule in the country.
A group of freedom fighters organised the condolence meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka city to commemorate the freedom fighter who once led Gonoforum as its president.
Mostafa Mohsin Montu died at a Dhaka hospital on June 15. He was 80.
Eminent jurist and emeritus president of Gonoforum Dr Kamal Hossain said that in his long political carrier Mostafa Mohsin Montu wanted to establish a democratic Bangladesh but his dream remained unfulfilled.
Kamal Hossain hoped that his dream would be fulfilled after the next general elections through which democracy and people鈥檚 voting rights would be established.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party central leader Fazlur Rahman iterated his party鈥檚 call at the meeting on the interim government to hold the next general elections by next February to facilitate the country鈥檚 transition to democracy.
He also called on the interim government to effectively prevent the rise of mob culture and stop assaults on the freedom fighters.
Freedom fighter Abdullah Al Mahmud said that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina must face trial as she fled the country, leaving it in the hands of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Central leader of Communist Party of Bangladesh MM Akash remarked that the fall of Awami League brought an end to the fascist rule.
Bangladesh Jasod general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan said that that people were eagerly waiting for democratic transition.
Journalist MA Aziz said that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was against the War of Independence and was now trying to control the present politics of the country.
Chaired by freedom fighter Mohammad Shahidur Rahman Shahid, Gonoforum general secretary Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, presidium member Subrata Chowdhury聽聽 daughter of Motafa Mohsin Montu,聽 Shama Mostafa, among others, spoke at the condolence meeting.
