Teachers and students from various departments of Dhaka University celebrated Sharat Utsab 1432 at the Bakultala of fine arts faculty on Thursday.
The event was organised by the DU FFA in collaboration with the departments of theatre and performance studies, music and dance, and Dhaka University Central Students’ Union.
It featured discussions, an art camp, and performances, including music, dance, and poem recitations.
Acting vice-chancellor Sayema Haque Bidisha inaugurated the event, which was chaired by FFA Dean Professor Azharul Islam Sheikh.
In her speech, Sayema Haque Bidisha emphasised the importance of cultural festivals in fostering social interaction and community building.
‘The different seasons are closely tied to our agriculture and production, while the colour of Sharat symbolises peace—something the world urgently needs,’ she said, adding that keeping the environment clean is crucial.
The cultural festivities began with a chorus rendition of Aji Dhaner Khete, performed by students of the music department.
Artists from the FFA and students from the departments of theatre and performance studies, music, dance, and various DU halls also took part in the performances.
An art camp was held at the venue, featuring both alumni and current FFA students, alongside guest artists.
Earlier, a similar event, scheduled for October 10 and organised by Satyen Sen Shilpigosthi, was postponed due to security concerns.
The event was scheduled to take place at the same venue, but the FFA announced its postponement, following a written complaint from the Anti-Fascist Writers, Journalists, and Artists’ Society.
The complaint alleged that one of the event’s organisers had links to fascist activities.
After reviewing the organisation’s activities during the tenure of the ousted Sheikh Hasina-lead Awami League government, the allocation for the Satyen Sen Shilpigosthi event was revoked.
In response, Dhaka University took the initiative to organise Sharat Utsab as part of its annual cultural activities.
