Workers launched a protest on Monday after they found a notice announcing the indefinite closure of AA Knit Spin Ltd in Sripur upazila of Gazipur district when they arrived at the factory for work.

Human resources manager at AA Knit Spin Ltd Monir Hossain said that the factory could not continue operations amid an ‘illegal strike and vandalism of valuable equipment, including machines, by the workers’.

The owner, as per Section 10(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, decided to shut the factory, located at Telihati union along Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, for an indefinite period, he said.

He also said that the workers would be informed about the date and time for receiving their current month wages by 10:00am today, adding that if the situation returned to normal, the reopening date of the factory would be announced later.

According to the workers, the current deadlock arose when payment of their salaries and other dues became irregular over the past several months.

Workers alleged that those who had been employed for more than five years had not received their service benefits, annual leave payments, meal allowances, incentive bonuses, or attendance bonuses.

They received their September wages on Sunday and did not see any closure notice at that time.

They found the closure notice dated October 23 on Monday, although the workers alleged that the notice was hung either on Sunday night or Monday morning.

The workers started protest in front of the factory at about 10:00am.

Gazipur Industrial Police inspector for Sripur zone Abdul Latif said that workers gathered in front of the factory in the morning, but they later left the area about noon without creating any unrest.  Â
