Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh have arrested taskforce-listed Yaba ‘godfather’ Monir Hossain alias Monir at Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar.

Monir, son of Jobbar Mulluk of Dhamankhali village, is also the prime accused in Shahjahan murder case and listed by the taskforce as a notorious narcotics trader, said a BGB media release signed by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commanding officer, Ukhia 64 battalion.

Tipped off that Monir would go to Rahmater Beel area of Balukhali union for sharing money of Yaba trade, a special team from 64 BGB conducted a drive on Monday afternoon.

Another special team from Balukhali BOP also took position in the area in advance.

As soon as BGB members reached the scene, Monir attempted to flee but was chased down and arrested, said the release.

He was later taken to the battalion headquarters for questioning.

During the preliminary interrogation, Monir reportedly confessed to his long involvement in Yaba smuggling and drug trading along the border.

He is a warranted accused in several murder and narcotics cases.

He had previously been released on bail in several cases but has been on the run since November 2024 in a case involving the recovery of 9,600 Yaba pills.

Mohammad Jasim Uddin said that while many Yaba smugglers caught by BGB were carriers or field-level operatives, godfathers like Monir have been controlling the networks from behind the scene. ‘We are identifying such masterminds and continuing operations against them.’
