
Rail communications between Dhaka city and three northern districts resumed after twelve hours following derailment of six compartments of a passenger train at Pirgachha in Rangpur on Tuesday afternoon.
Rail communications between Dhaka and Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts remained halted for about 12 hours after the incident.
A four-member probe committee, headed by Lalmonirhat divisional transportation officer Abdullah Al Mamun, was formed to determine the reasons for the derailment, according to Bangladesh Railway official sources.
Six compartments of Padmarag train were derailed near the outer signal of Pirgachha railway station due to displacement of a plate on the line separator when it was heading towards Lalmonirhat on Tuesday at aabout 12:30pm. No casualty was reported in the incident.
The derailment has caused disruptions to several northern intercity and commuter trains, including Rangpur Express, Burimari Express, Kurigram Express, Dolonchapa Express and Korotoa Express.
‘The rail communication was restored on the tracks at about 1:00 am on Wednesday, after a hectic effort of 12 hours.
The recovery work to clear the track was delayed due to heavy rainfall, said Abu Hena Mostafa Alam, Lalmonirhat divisional railway manager.
The investigation team started working to find out the exact causes of the derailment, he added.
