Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad panel’s vice-president candidate Abdul Kader on Tuesday evening termed the elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union a power-sharing exercise between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Speaking at a press conference at the Teachers-Students Centre, he said that it became evident that the election commission and the administration were immersed in the politics of power-sharing.
‘This was not students’ election,’ Abdul Kader said, alleging that it was, instead, an arrangement between Jamaat and the BNP, Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
He added that Shibir’s Sadiq Kayem manipulated the process from inside while Chhatra Dal exerted influence from outside, and that repeated attempts to contact the returning officers went unanswered.
At the same briefing, general secretary candidate of the panel, Abu Baker Majumdar, said that irregularities were widespread throughout the day.
The commission failed to decorate the campus properly, failed to enforce rules on voter entry, creating disorder at centres, added Baker.
He also alleged that though polling began peacefully in the morning, later irregularities were reported, particularly in Amar Ekushey Hall, Ruqayyah Hall and Shamsunnahar Hall.
