
A suspected robber was killed and another was injured on Sunday in a lynching incident in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali district.
The incident happened at around 3:30am in the Kashipur bazar area of the upazila while they fleeing after robbery.
The deceased was identified as Ujjal, a resident of Kanakdia union, while the robber injured in the mass beating was identified as Rajib alias Raju, a resident of Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali.
However, injured robber Rajib said that the looted goods were with another member of the gang Bachchu, who is a resident of Kalaiya union of Bauphal upazila.
According to local sources, a group of robbers raided the house of Khalil Hawladar and Azhar Jamaddar in Adabaria union late at night.
At that time, they beat up the family members took them hostage at the point of country-made weapons.
The robbers looted about Tk 10 lakh in cash and a large amount of gold ornaments from the houses.
When the robbers tried to escape, the locals chased them after hearing the victims screaming, detained two and beat them up.
However, the other members of the group managed to flee with the looted goods.
Akhtaruzzaman Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Bauphal Police Station, said that the locals detained two people on charges of robbery and beat them up.
The police later rescued and admitted them in the local hospital.
One of them was declared dead by the doctor there. The other is being treated under police guard.
