The police recovered the dismembered body of a person from an abandoned travel bag at Tongi in Gazipur on Friday morning.

The police recovered body parts wrapped in polythene inside the bag at about 10:00am on the day on Tongi Station Road along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

The victim was identified as Oli Mia, 36, who worked as a helper at a Azmeri Paribahan bus, Tongi East police station officer-in-charge Faridul Islam said.

‘The Police Bureau of Investigation was able to confirm the identity of the victim through fingerprints. However, the head of the body has not been found yet,’ he said.

The police official also said that police believed that the victim was killed elsewhere two to three days ago before being dumped at the location.

‘After inspecting the scene, the body parts have been sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved,’ he said.

Police were trying to confirm the identity of the deceased, he said, adding that a case would be filed in this connection.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department visited the scene to assist with the investigation, added the police official.

Local people said that they spotted the travel bag in Tongi Station Road area on Friday morning.

A foul smell coming from the bag prompted them to alert law enforcers, they said.
