One of the three workers who were injured in an air-conditioner compressor explosion on the rooftop of Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Monday morning died in the afternoon.

The worker, Mohammad Shawkat, 28, succumbed to his injuries while he was undergoing treatment at the CMCH, a doctor said.

Shawkat was an outsourced employee of the Public Works Department.

The two other workers, Md Mishkat and Md Tanvir, were also outsourced employees of the same department.

Professor Dr Harunur Rashid, head of the CMCH鈥檚 intensive care unit, said that the three critically injured workers were admitted to the ICU at the hospital following the blast.

Shawkat died at about 2:45pm, he said, adding that the condition of the other two injured workers remained critical.

The explosion occurred at about 11:00am on the rooftop of the seven-floor hospital building, said police.

CMCH police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Alauddin Talukder said that the accident occurred while the three were repairing an AC unit of the gynaecology ward.

Shawkat and Mishkat were admitted to the hospital鈥檚 burn and plastic surgery unit, while Tanvir suffered critical injuries after falling from the rooftop following the blast. Tanvir is now undergoing treatment at the hospital鈥檚 intensive care unit, Alauddin said.

No patients or other hospital staff members were injured in the incident, the police official added.
