A private car driver was arrested from Sylhet on Tuesday night on charges of kidnap and rape of an adolescent girl, confining her in a hotel.
Arrested Akhter Ali, 27, is a resident of Kayasthagram village in Sylhet’s Fenchuganj upazila, said the police.
Relatives of the girl, 17, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that she along with her mother boarded a Dhaka-bound train on Tuesday noon from Sylhet railway station to return home in Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar.
But the girl got down at Kulaura railway station amid a huge crowd, mistakenly taking it for Bhanugachh railway station, where they were supposed to disembark. While she was waiting to board the next train having stoppage at Bhanugachh, Akhter Ali approached her, telling her that he would take her home in his car, the victim’s relatives said.
They alleged that Akhter took her to a hotel in Kadamtali area in Sylhet city, confined her in a rented room, snatched her phone and raped her repeatedly.
The car driver also contacted a relative of the victim over phone and demanded Tk 20,000 ransom, impersonating as army personnel, the relatives said.
Kulaura Railway Police sub-inspector Deepak Dewan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they traced and rescued the girl from Kadamtali at about 8:00pm Tuesday through tracking the mobile phone after they received complaint from the victim’s relatives. They also nabbed Akhter during the same raid.Â
‘The arrested was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court on Wednesday in a case filed with the railway police. The court ordered to send him to jail,’ the police officer said.
He added that the victim was admitted to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for treatment and medical examinations.
