Emergency services at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital resumed on Wednesday after a week-long suspension of all forms of treatments.
However, all other services, including outdoor service, remained suspended on the day.
Treatment at the hospital, located in Dhaka’s Agargaon area, was suspended after a clash broke out on May 28 between the hospital staff, outdoor patients and the July uprising injured who were admitted at the hospital.
A queue of more than hundred patients was seen in front of the emergency service room at the hospital on Wednesday.
Doctor Al-Amin, who is handling patients alone at the emergency department, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the rush of patients had increased on the day.
He said that the emergency services would remain open round the clock.
The service resumed about 9:30am, and by 11:40am, 170 patients registered for availing emergency services while many more were waiting to get registered.
Patients expressed dissatisfaction as they could not purchase medicines or undergo the tests prescribed by the emergency doctor at the hospital.
Marina, who came from Barishal, said she had been suffering from eye pain and was struggling to see properly.
‘The doctor has prescribed me an eye drop as other treatments are not available right now. But the hospital isn’t providing medicines to the patients today. I’m a poor person and can’t afford all these expenses,’ said the middle-aged woman.
Jahangir, a salesperson at the hospital’s pharmacy, said that free medicines were not provided to the patients on Wednesday.
He added that medicine distribution might resume after Eid-uk-Azha.
Police were seen deployed on the hospital premises.
On May 28, the hospital staff, doctors, and nurses began a work stoppage demanding their security, a day after NIOH director Khair Ahmed Choudhury was besieged for two hours by protesters following suicide attempts by four July uprising survivors on May 25.
At one point, a clash broke out among the hospital staff, outpatients and those injured in the 2024 July uprising, leaving 21 people injured.
Offering apology for the disruption in services at the hospital, the ministry on Saturday requested the patients to seek treatment at the nearby hospitals.
