Operations at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital were suspended Wednesday morning following clashes involving hospital doctors and staff, patients injured during the July movement, and general patients.
The clash left hundreds of patients without care, prompting heavy security deployment on the premises, officials said.
The clash occurred at about 11:00am when the hospital doctors, staff and employees began work stoppage demanding safety at the hospital.
They began the demonstration as the hospital director Khair Ahmed Chowdhury was confined in his office for two hours and staff members were attacked by the July-uprising victims admitted to the hospital.
The July-uprising victims confined the hospital director in his office room, alleging that they were not getting proper treatment at the hospital.
As the news spread, more July uprising injured individuals from hospitals including Bangladesh Medical University and NITOR rushed to the eye hospital and joined the clash, officials at the eye hospital claimed.
They said that all departments of the hospital were closed soon and doctors, officials and staff of the hospital left the scene.
They said that the members of the law enforcement agencies rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Khair Ahmed Chowdhury claimed that 13 or 14 staff and doctors of the hospital were injured in the attack.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s additional deputy commissioner for Tejgaon division, Alamgir Kabir, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the evening that the situation was under control.
‘The police and the army members went to the spot and brought the situation under control. The teams left the scene later. But, we are keeping the hospital under surveillance to avoid any further untoward situation,’ he added.
The unrest erupted from a recent incident involving four patients injured during the July mass uprising, who allegedly attempted to commit suicide in the hospital premises, leading to verbal disputes, physical assaults, and vandalism targeting the hospital director, doctors, and staff.
