
Heavy rainfall and disruption in waterways communication across the country following a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal, caused huge sufferings of people throughout Thursday.
The deep depression over the Northwest Bay and adjoining areas completed crossing the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara by 6:30pm on the day, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
After crossing, the depression lied over Satkhira and adjoining areas as a land deep depression which could become weaker by today morning, said officials at the met office.
Till filing this report at 9:00pm, information of causalities or major damage could not be known from the affected areas.
Due to warning of heavy rainfall till tomorrow, the Bangladesh Water Development Board has warned of flood-like situation in six districts of the country’s north-eastern and eastern regions — Feni, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Netrakona.
The BMD in a special bulletin warned that due to the influence of new moon phase and deep depression, the low-lying areas of the 16 coastal districts, Chattogram, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Hatiya, Sandwip, Chandpur, Borguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind-driven surge of 1 to 3 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
All maritime ports – Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra - have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no 3, the bulletin added.
Earlier a low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, which later intensified into a deep depression on Thursday.
Since Thursday morning light to heavy rainfall occurred at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that the Barishal River Port authorities suspended small launch operations on 16 routes, including Bhola, Mehendiganj, Hijla, Bakerganj, from the port since about 8:00am on Thursday.
Mohammad Selim Reza, the port officer, said that due to adverse weather, low pressure and heavy rainfall, the services were suspended.
According to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s Aricha office, the launch movement on the Daulatdia-Paturia route from Rajbari to Manikganj and on the Aricha-Kazirhat route from Manikganj to Pabna had been suspended since about 9:00am on Thursday.
Later at about 4:30pm on the day, the BIWTA in a press release suspended all types of vessel movement on all inland and coastal water routes across the country until further notice.
Following the suspension of the vessel movement, people suffered heavily in the affected districts on the day.
According to the met office, the deep depression started to cross the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast from Thursday afternoon and completed the crossing by the evening.
AKM Nazmul Hoque, a meteorologist at the BMD, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· at about 8:30pm that the deep depression now turned into a land deep depression which could become weaker by today morning.
‘From 7:00pm Thursday we forecasted for heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours in all divisions except Rajshahi and Rangpur,’ he said.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondents in Chattogram, Barishal and Noakhali reported that heavy rainfall affected the public life throughout the day while many working people could not go to work.
Chattogram divisional commissioner Md Ziauddin and Khulna divisional commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar said that till evening, they did not get any information about causalities or damage for coastal tide.
The BMD also issued a landslide warning on the day for Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Cox’s Bazar districts.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice.
