
The deep depression over Northwest Bay and adjoining areas has completed crossing the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
A special bulletin issued by the department at 6:30pm on Thursday also read that the depression now lies over Satkhira and adjacent areas as a land deep depression.
Due to the influence of new moon phase and deep depression the low-lying areas of the 16 coastal districts - Chattogram, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Hatiya, Sandwip, Chandpur, Borguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 1 to 3 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
All maritime ports – Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra - have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no. 3, the bulletin added.
The BMD also issued separate warnings on the day for heavy rainfall, landslides, water logging and movement on the inland river ports.
Meanwhile, movements of launches were closed on the Barishal routes, Dauladia-Paturia and Aricha-Kazirhat routes by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority on the day following the depression.
Following the depression, rainfall disrupted the daily activities of the people in the capital since morning.
On some roads, water logging was seen in areas including – Hatirpool, Dhanmondi and New Market areas.
A heavy rainfall warning read that under the influence of the depression, heavy (44 to 88mm/24-hours) to very heavy (over 88mm/24 hours) rainfall is likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions during the next 48 hours commencing at 11:00am of Thursday.
The same warning continued that – due to very heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly districts of Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Cox’s Bazar.
It added that temporary water logging may occur at places over Dhaka and Chattofram metropolitan areas.
Another warning for the inland river ports read that the warning would be valid till 6:00pm of Thursday commencing 9:30am of the same day.
Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary squall speeds of 60-80kph are likely to occur over the regions of Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla and Chattogram.
