The country’s two leading telecom operators, Robi Axiata PLC and Grameenphone, officially launched commercial 5G services on Monday, both claiming to be the first telecom operators.

Robi organised a formal launch at its corporate office in the capital and it activated 5G in different parts of the country, including Dhaka’s Fakirapul (Paltan), some parts of Dhaka University, Magbazar Chowrasta, Khulshi in Chattogram and Sagor Dighir Par in Sylhet.


Meanwhile, Grameenphone chief executive officer Yasir Azman announced commercial launch of the operator’s 5G services in all divisional headquarters in Bangladesh through the company’s official Facebook page.

At Robi’s event, Shish Haider Chowdhury, secretary of the ICT Division, said that launching 5G technology was an important milestone in Bangladesh’s journey forward.

It is not just about faster connectivity, but about opening new opportunities for economic growth, employment, education, healthcare and development of smart cities, he added.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman Major General (retired) Md Emdad ul Bari said that with the launch of 5G, the country’s telecom sector had entered a new horizon.

‘We expect operators to use this technology responsibly to deliver maximum benefit to the people,’ he said.

M Riyaaz Rasheed, acting CEO of Robi, said that thanks to the government’s vision and policy support, they has been able to bring 5G to life in record time.

‘This rollout will play an important role in taking Bangladesh’s digital economy to the next stage. For the first time, our customers can experience what the future of connectivity looks like,’ he added.

Yasir Azman, chief executive officer of Grameenphone, said that this was a proud moment for Grameenphone as it launched 5G services across all divisional headquarters, delivering transformative technology to the people of Bangladesh.

‘With 5G, we are introducing a faster, more reliable network while opening the door for possibilities in innovation, entrepreneurship, and smart solutions that will shape the nation’s future. This milestone advances our mission to connect people to what matters most, driving progress, productivity, and boundless opportunities nationwide,’ he added.

He also thanked the government and the BTRC for their support in making it possible to bring this modern technology to the people of Bangladesh.

According to the mobile operators, customers having 5G-supported devices in activated areas will be able to directly experience the advanced network.

The service would gradually be expanded to additional locations in phases.

They also said that the launch of 5G marked the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s digital transformation.

With its high-speed bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and massive device connectivity, 5G is expected to unlock opportunities across emerging fields such as smart cities, telemedicine, augmented and virtual reality and cloud gaming.
