Residents of Chuadanga formed a human chain, protesting at the posting of Gautam Kumar Biswas, former deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mirpur Zone, as the new superintendent of police for the district.
Hundreds of residents gathered in front of Chuadanga Press Club under the banner ‘Chuadanga residents’ to form the human chain.
Addressing the human chain, the protesters said that Gautam Biswas as an ‘ally of the fascists’, demanding his immediate withdrawal from the district, warning of larger protests.
They alleged that during his previous postings in Pabna and Dhaka, Gautam was involved in harassing common people and attacks on students during the July uprising.
Chuadanga does not want a fascist, it wants a humane police chief, they said.
The home ministry on September 11 announced Gautam’s appointment as the police super for the district although he has yet to assume his duties in Chuadanga.
Among others, Chuadanga district Amar Bangladesh Party president Alamgir Hossain, National Citizen Party joint coordinator Samir Hossain, Jamaat-e-Islam president for local Ward 9 Sharif Hasan and local leaders Rafiqul Kadir and Suman Reza addressed the human chain.
