The body of a 19-year-old college student, allegedly strangled to death at his girlfriend’s residence in Old Dhaka’s Bangshal area, was recovered on Saturday evening.
The deceased was identified as Md Sajib, who had recently taken his Higher Secondary Certificate exams from Ahmed Bawany Academy School and College.
The body was recovered days after the recovery of a Jagannath University student’s body from the same area.
According to the police, Sajib’s body was recovered from the staircases of a four-storey building on Agamasi Lane.
Bangshal police sub-inspector Md Dulal Haque said that local people called the police after discovering the body.
Sajib’s identity was traced through his mobile phone, he said.
‘The body was lying face down on the stairs with a GI wire wrapped tightly around the neck. The apartment where the crime took place was found locked from outside,’ said the police officer.
‘Preliminary evidence suggests he was strangled to death,’ he added.
Recovering the body, the police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
At DMCH, Sajib’s cousin Md Islam told the media that Sajib went out around 3:00pm after receiving a phone call and hours later, his family received news that his body had been found in a nearby building.
Islam alleged that Sajib and a young woman were in a relationship for nearly six years and the house from which the body was recovered belonged to her family.
The police also said that no case was filed regarding the incident till filing of this at 7:30pm.
Jobayed Hossain was a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The police are investigating both incidents amid growing concerns over the rise in violent crimes involving young people in Old Dhaka neighbourhoods.
