Robbers on early Thursday allegedly looted about 500 bharis of gold from a jewellery shop at Fortune Shopping Mall in front of Mouchak Market at Malibagh in the capital Dhaka.

The shop owner and police said that the robbery took place at about 3:00am at Shampa Jewellers at the shopping centre’s first floor.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner for Ramna zone Mazharul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that police collected CCTV footage and were investigating the incident.

Referring to the collected CCTV footage, the police official said that the incident took place between 3:00am and 4:00am.

CCTV footage shows that two members of the gang, wearing burqas, entered the market and cut the shop’s shutter lock for looting, said the shop owner, Achintyo Kumar Biswas.

He claimed that about 400 bharis of gold from the counter, 100 bharis of mortgaged gold and some cash were looted from the shop.

‘I closed the shop at about 9:00pm and went home. In the morning, at about 6:30am, the shopping centre’s security guard called me and informed me that there was a problem at my shop. When I arrived at the shop, I saw everything was gone,’ he said.

DMP assistant commissioner Mazharul said that police and members of the Criminal Investigation Department, Detective Branch and Rapid Action Battalion visited the spot in the morning and collected evidence.

They found broken window grill on the second floor of the shopping centre, police said, adding that the robbers might have entered the shopping centre through a window on the floor.

Mazharul on Thursday afternoon said that the shop owner was yet to file a case.
