Gopalganj turned into battle field on Wednesday after violent clashes erupted as activists of Awami League and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked motorcade of National Citizen Party, vandalised the party’s rally venue at Gopalganj Municipality Park and clashed with security forces.

The NCP organised a programme in Gopalganj as part of the party's month-long nationwide programme from July 1 to August 5 marking the first anniversary of the uprising.

The rally venue was attacked before the scheduled programme. Several people, including police personnel, were injured in the attack.

After the event concluded, the venue was set on fire and motorcade of the NCP was attacked.

While talking to reporters on the Gopalganj district Superintendent of Police office premises, NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said that activists of local AL and its affiliated organisations from across the country took shelter in Gopalganj and attacked them.

Several people were injured in the clash.

He alleged that the police and army did not play adequate roles to ensure security for the NCP leaders and activists, and were supporting the AL.

‘If the police and army administration fail to ensure security, we are preparing to announce war,’ said Nasiruddin.

Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed in area.
