
Two more dengue patients died in hospitals while 159 others were hospitalised after being infected by the viral fever across the country in the past 24 hours till 8:00am on Friday.
Both of the deceased were men from the Barishal division.
One of them, aged 50, died while undergoing treatment at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College and Hospital in Barishal. The victim hailed from Hizla in the Barishal district.
Another victim, 72, who hailed from Tiakhali under the Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali died at Patuakhali Health Complex, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Including the latest, a total of 40 people died of dengue this year and 9,222 others were hospitalised with the disease across the country.
Of them, 4, 877 people were hospitalised in the first 27 days of June while 17 others died of dengue at the same time.
In January 1,161 people were hospitalised, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May.
At the same time 10 people died of dengue in January, three in February, seven in April and three in May.
Of the hospitalised patients in the past 24 hours, 107 patients were hospitalised in Barishal, 11 in Chattogram, six in the Dhaka South City Corporation, 15 in the Dhaka North City Corporation, 12 in different districts of Dhaka, six in Rajshahi and two in Sylhet.
The vector-born disease dengue has arisen as a serious public health concern in the country over the past several years.
A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to DGHS data. Dengue killed 1,705 people and sent 3, 21,179 others to hospitals in 2023 alone against 853 deaths and 2, 44,246 hospitalisation between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.
Last year, the country witnessed a severe dengue outbreak that resulted in 575 deaths and 101,214 reported cases. A total of 100,040 patients recovered during the period.
