
Two more people died of dengue while 195 patients were hospitalised across Bangladesh during the past 24 hours till Thursday morning.
The Directorate General of Health Services data showed two fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Dhaka South City Corporation areas. A male aged between 11 and 15 died at Mugda Medical College Hospital, and a female aged between 46 and 50 died at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.Â
With these new deaths, the country’s dengue death toll has climbed to 38, including 17 from outside Dhaka, this year.
During the same period, the total number of reported dengue cases increased to 9,065.
Of the hospitalised patients in the past 24 hours, the highest 74 were from the Barishal division.
At least eight patients were reported in Chattogram, 32 in the Dhaka South City Corporation, 28 in the Dhaka North City Corporation, 30 in different districts of Dhaka, three in Sylhet, two in Mymensingh and 18 in Rajshahi.
The vector-born disease dengue has arisen as a serious public health concern in the country over the past several years.
A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to DGHS data.
Dengue killed 1,705 people and sent 3, 21,179 others to hospitals in 2023 alone against 853 deaths and 2, 44,246 hospitalisation between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.
Last year, the country witnessed a severe dengue outbreak that resulted in 575 deaths and 101,214 reported cases. A total of 1,00,040 patients recovered during the period.
