Muslims across Bangladesh are celebrating Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the community, today with due solemnity, a spirit of sacrifice, and religious fervour.

The main congregation (jamaat) of Eid-ul-Azha in Dhaka was held at around 7:30am at the National Eidgah ground adjacent to the High Court.

Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah鈥檚 command.

Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Friday greeted the people of Bangladesh, as well as Muslims around the world, on the occasion of the holy Eid.

Considering the recent rise in COVID-19 infections, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday urged everyone to wear masks in crowded areas, while advising the elderly and those who are ill to avoid such places.

Following the Eid prayers, Muslims began performing the ritual of sacrificing animals and are distributing the meat among relatives, friends, and the poor.

This year, about 1.24 crore animals were readied for sacrifice during Eid-ul-Azha, said Fisheries and Livestock adviser Farida Akhter during a press conference at Bangladesh Secretariat on May 4.

Beginning on Wednesday, the 10-day Eid holiday will continue until June 14. During this period, all government and private offices, banks, and factories will remain closed.

Thousands of people have left Dhaka to celebrate Eid with their families and loved ones in different parts of the country.

Among the five Eid-ul-Azha congregations scheduled for today at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, the first two were held at 7:00am and 8:00am, while the remaining three will take place at 9:00am, 10:00am, and 10:45am.

Both the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation have announced that they will remove sacrificial animal waste on a daily basis during Eid.

After visiting the National Eidgah on Thursday morning, DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia said that waste management work would begin on the afternoon of Eid, with around 10,000 workers deployed to clean up sacrificial waste within 12 hours.

Similarly, DNCC has also deployed about 10,000 workers to carry out waste removal each day during the festival.

To ensure public safety, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali said on Friday that 500 patrol teams had been deployed at night and 250 during the day, as the city remains relatively empty during the holidays.

The country鈥檚 largest Eid congregation is set to be held at Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj at 9:00am.

Elsewhere in the country, the main Eid congregation in Chattogram took place at the Jamiatul Falah National Mosque at 7:30am. In Rajshahi, it was held at 7:30am at the Hazrat Shah Makhdum (R) Central Eidgah ground.

In Khulna, the main congregation was held at the Circuit House ground at 7:30am, and in Barishal, it took place at the Hemayet Uddin Central Eidgah ground on Band Road at the same time.
