An elderly man was beaten to death allegedly by his rivals in village Maliat under Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah on Wednesday.
The deceased is Nayeb Ali Molla, 65, of the village.
Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam Hawlader, quoting local people, said that there had been a long-standing dispute between Nayeb Ali Molla and Yunus Ali over a piece of land. 聽聽
As a sequel to the dispute, Nayeb Ali locked in an altercation with Yunus over the issue.
Yunus Ali and his son Alamin Hossain hit on the head of Nayeb Ali with sticks, leaving him seriously injured on the spot, the OC said.聽
The two groups then swooped on each other with locally made sharp weapons.
Family members rescued Nayeb Ali and took him to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the police official said.
No case was lodged and none was arrested in this connection until Wednesday evening, the police said.
