A man was beaten to death and another was seriously injured on suspicion of mobile phone theft in the Amtala area of Konabari in聽 Gazipur city on Sunday.
The deceased, Jewel Talukdar, 43, of Kendua upazila of Netrakona, had been living at a rented house at Hossain Ali鈥檚 residence in the Amtala area for the past six years.
After falling ill with jaundice, he started earning a living by pulling a van and occasionally selling seasonal fruits.
The seriously injured Abdul Haque was undergoing treatment in critical condition at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
Konabari police station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police officer-in-charge Salahuddin said that the deceased, Jewel, and the injured Abdul were involved in a mobile phone theft using Abdul鈥檚 daughter.
On May 23, Abdul鈥檚 daughter stole a mobile phone from a local residence and then handed it to Jewel and Abdul which they later sold, the OC said.聽
Identifying the girl through CCTV footage, the residents detained her when she went to the same house on Sunday morning.
After she confessed, locals caught Jewel and Abdul and beat them leaving one dead on the spot and another injured, the OC said, adding that legal action is under way.
