
A man was allegedly beaten to death after he reportedly attempted to mug an auto-rickshaw in the Tantar area of Srinagar upazila in Munshiganj on Saturday.
The deceased, Zahir, 35, died while undergoing treatment at Srinagar Upazila Health Complex at about 11:00am.
Two of the deceased’s associates, also injured in the incident, were in critical condition.
Srinagar police officer-in-charge Shakil Ahmed said that four people boarded an auto-rickshaw of Mohsin Mia in Tantar area in the early hours of the day.
‘One of them assaulted the driver and tried to mug the auto-rickshaw,’ the police officer said, adding that when the driver screamed, local people caught three of the muggers and beat them up. On information, the police rushed to the scene and took the injured to the health complex, where one of them died, the OC said.
‘Legal action is under way in this regard, added the police officer.
According to monthly data of rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra, 11 people were beaten to death in February this year while 16 people were lynched in January.
At least 128 people were beaten to death between January and December in 2024, according to the ASK data.
