
Independence Award-winning writer and educationist Professor Jatin Sarkar died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College on Wednesday.
He was 89.
Jatin Sarkar, also a former president of cultural organisation Bangladesh Udichi Shipligoshthi, breathed his last at about 2:45pm on the day, according to Mymensingh Medical College deputy director Md Zakiul Islam.
Jatin Sarkar was admitted to the hospital on August 8.
He was suffering from various complications, including kidney and old-age ailments, said Zakiul.
Jatin Sarkar is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
His body was kept at the Udichi Mymensingh unit and Udichi Netrakona unit premises for paying last respects.
The adviser to the primary and mass education ministry, Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, expressed deep condolences saying, ‘In his death, we have not only lost a person, we have lost an ideal, a philosophy and an inspiration. His life teaches us how to face society with logic, humanity and courage.’
Different political and cultural organisations, including the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Udichi Shipligoshthi, theatre troupe BotTala and quarterly magazine Drishokal offered condolences to the bereaved family.
Born on August 18, 1936, Jatin Sarkar received the Independence Award in 2010 and the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2007.
He was scheduled to be cremated at his ancestral village in Netrakona on Wednesday night.
