
Writer, social reformer and philanthropist Begum Sitara Chowdhury, the wife of late Justice AFM Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, died on Wednesday at a hospital in Dhaka. She was 88.
She left two sons and two daughters to mourn her death.
Born on January 14, 1937 in Calcutta, she was the daughter of Sadeqa Begum and Md Jane Alam, a prominent lawyer who practiced at both the Bombay and Calcutta High Courts before moving to Dhaka in 1950.
Begum Sitara hailed from a notable lineage. Her great-grandfather, Hazrat Shah Sufi Fateh Ali Waisi (RA), was a revered Sufi saint, Islamic scholar, and Persian-language poet, known for the epic Diwan-e-Waisi.
In 1955, she married AFM Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, the eldest son of Khan Bahadur Abdul Latif Chowdhury, the Zamindar of Ulania in Barishal.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts from BM College in Barishal.
An advocate for justice and social reform, Begum Sitara was known for her strong moral values and contributions to charitable causes.
She authored Shomoyer Kotha, a reflective work urging societal commitment to integrity, compassion, and justice.
