Barrister Abdur Razzaq, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and former assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 75.
His son, Supreme Court lawyer Imran Abdullah Siddiq, confirmed to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Abdur Razzaq breathed his last at about 4:10pm at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer for a prolonged period.
Razzaq is survived by his wife, two sons—both Supreme Court lawyers—a daughter, and a large community of juniors and well-wishers.
His second janaza is scheduled for 11:00am Monday at the Supreme Court premises.
Chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep condolences, saying, ‘Bangladesh has lost a star in the legal arena—an irreparable loss to the judiciary.’
A prominent figure in both legal and political spheres, Razzaq gained national attention as chief defence counsel during the proceedings of the International Crimes Tribunal in 2009, where he defended several top Jamaat leaders accused of war crimes.
Born on December 31, 1949, in Sylhet, Razzaq was called to the Bar of England and Wales by The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 1980. He was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court Division in 1988 and the Appellate Division in 1994.
Over a distinguished career, Razzaq handled numerous landmark constitutional and public interest cases and contributed legal writings to both local and international publications.
He left Bangladesh for London on December 17, 2013, after being implicated in two explosive-related cases during the Awami League government’s tenure. He returned in August 2024, nearly 11 years later, following a student-led uprising that led to the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina from office.
Although once a key figure in Jamaat-e-Islami, Razzaq later severed ties with the party and became a founding adviser of the Amar Bangladesh Party.
Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman and secretary general Mia Golam Parwar expressed deep sorrow over his passing. Amar Bangladesh Party chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju and general secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad also issued a condolence message, mourning the loss of their party’s founding adviser.
