The police arrested an additional 46 leaders and activists of Awami League, activities of which are now banned, and its affiliated organisations from different parts of Dhaka city allegedly for disrupting law and order by bringing out flash processions.
The police have arrested nearly 3,000 leaders and activists of the banned AL and its affiliated organizations from Dhaka city this year for their involvement in flash processions, which have occurred after the interim government in May banned all AL activities pending their trials for alleged atrocities during the July 2024 uprising.
Addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media Centre on Friday afternoon, DMP Deputy Commissioner for media and public relations Talebur Rahman said that police conducted drives in different areas of the city and arrested 46 people while making preparations to bring out flash processions.
According to him, 18 were arrested by the police of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station while four by Khilkhet police station, two by Uttara police station, three by Badda police station, three by Banani police station, three by Tejgaon police station and 13 were arrested by Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit.
When asked about the total number of arrested AL and its affiliated organisation leaders and activists, the DMP official said that police arrested about 3,000 leaders and activists so far.
Legal actions against them are under way, Talebur mentioned.
Police in Cumilla also arrested 12 leaders and activists of AL and its affiliated organisations in the early hours of Friday after a flash procession video clip went viral on social media on Thursday, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Correspondent in Cumilla.
Cumilla Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mohinul Islam said, ‘We conducted a drive and arrested 12 people in connection with the procession. Legal action has been taken against them.’
