Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chair Tarique Rahman on Monday alleged that conspiracies were under way to obstruct the people’s right to vote and undermine democratic progress in Bangladesh.
‘Efforts are under way to sabotage the BNP’s plans to advance the country and improve the living standards of the citizens,’ he said while virtually addressing a Naogaon district unit BNP conference.
He said that conspiracies had begun at various places to ensure that these plans could not be realized, claiming that these schemes were also designed to obstruct the country’s return to a democratic state.
Reflecting on the political landscape following the departure of the former autocratic leader, Tarique cautioned that the forthcoming election would be the most challenging one in the history of Bangladesh.
‘Many believed that the absence of a visible opponent would make the election easier. However, invisible forces and various conspiracies are at work. In reality, it will be far more difficult than anticipated,’ he said.
Tarique emphasised the need for resilience and determination, urging the BNP members to take the difficult path ahead to counter the ongoing conspiracies.
The true capital of a political party is its members while its ideals are built on their trust, faith, and love, he remarked.
Tarique called on all BNP members across Bangladesh to remain vigilant, stressing that nothing should be done, which would damage public trust in or affection for the party and that such actions must be completely avoided.
He also instructed the party leaders and activists to hold one another accountable to prevent any behaviour that could harm the party’s reputation or weaken the people’s confidence. He also cautioned the party people against the opportunists in the political environment.
‘There are many who move around the party seeking to exploit it for personal gain. They serve no one but themselves, using and damaging the party’s name. When difficulties will arise, they will disappear,’ Tarique further commented.
Tarique said that every supporter of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia must remain united like brothers and sisters to foil the conspiracies against democracy and implement the 31-point BNP plan.
About the expected election in February, he hoped that the people of Bangladesh would finally exercise their long-awaited political rights through a neutral and fair electoral process.
Tarique said that the people would select their representatives in this election to protect the nation’s future.
He said that governing the country properly after the election would even be more important, more difficult, and absolutely essential.
