Amid rumours of a split in the Jatiya Party, some senior leaders of the party faction, led by Anisul Islam Mahmud, on Friday announced that the party’s 10th national council session would be held at a community centre at Gulshan in Dhaka today.

The party’s acting chair Anisul Islam Mahmud, speaking at a press conference at Haolader Tower in Dhaka, announced the council.

JP secretary general Mojibul Haque Chunnu confirmed the matter, telling ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘The 10th national council will mark a turning point for the party, ending years of internal division.’

The event comes against the backdrop of organisational uncertainty. On July 7, party chair GM Quader relieved 10 leaders from their positions, including senior co-chairs Anisul Islam Mahmud, ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, and secretary general Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu.

On July 30, a Dhaka court issued a temporary injunction barring the party chair from organisational activities.

Later, on August 5, the party presidium members met under Anisul’s chairmanship and unanimously decided to proceed with references to the section 20(2)(b) of the Jatiya Party’s constitution, according to party leaders.

Citing that the Jatiya Party was still the 12th registered political party with the Election Commission, Anisul said, ‘The present situation, along with the upcoming national election, made it essential to convene the council without delay.’

According to the EC guidelines, the deadline for holding the Jatiya Party’s 10th national council was June 30.

Earlier, party leaders set the council date for June 28, but postponed it due to the unavailability of a suitable venue, said Anisul.

Senior leaders, including co-chair Syed Abu Hossain Babla, presidium members Nasrin Jahan Ratna, Shafiqul Islam Sentu, Zahirul Islam Zahir, and Mostafa Al Mahmud, among others, were present in the press conference.
