
Protests erupted in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country condemning acquittal of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former alleged Al-Badr commander ATM Azharul Islam who was charged with war crimes.
The protest demonstrations by left students also came under attack in Chattogram and Rajshahi allegedly by Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat.Â
In front of Chattogram Press Club, at least 15 leaders and activists of the Democratic Student Alliance, a combine of seven student organisations of left political parties, were injured in an attack allegedly by a group identifying itself as the Anti-Shahbagh Unity, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Correspondent in Chattogram.
Central leaders and activists of the combine at Dhaka University also brought out a torch procession on Wednesday evening protesting at the alleged attack by Shibir on the left students in Rajshahi and Chattogram.
In Chattogram, Ripa Majumdar, president of the Chattogram city unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Srikanth Biswas Siku, general secretary of the Democratic Students’ Council district unit, sustained serious head injuries. Sudipto Guha, finance secretary of the organisation, was also severely injured.
All the three injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Pushpita Nath, vice-president of the Socialist Students’ Front city unit, alleged that activists of Chhatrashibir carried out the attack on their rally leaving 15 members of the combine, including women, injured.
The unity members also seized the banner of rally and set fire to it.
Chattogram metropolitan unit of Chhatra Shibir in a statement denied its involvement in the attack.
Chattogram Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abdul Karim said, ‘A few people were injured, but we brought the situation under control promptly.’
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that a torch procession on the university premises brought out by Rajshahi unit of the combine protesting at the Azhar’s acquittal came under an attack on Tuesday night, allegedly by activists of Shibir.
Witnesses said that the attack left at least five people, including a journalist injured.
At a press conference on Wednesday noon, Nasim Sarkar, convener of RU unit Chhatra Gonomoncho, alleged that a mob of about two hundred people, led by RU unit Chhatrashibir publicity secretary Nawshazzaman carried out the attack.
RU Chhatra Shibir, however, denied the allegation.
Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam, who had been on death row for war crimes, was released from custody on Wednesday morning—just a day after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court overturned his conviction for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 War Of Independence.
