Democratic Students’ Alliance, Dhaka University unit, on Tuesday condemned the recent eviction drives, attacks, and harassment incidents on Dhaka University campus, and placed a five-point demand to ensure justice and restore a safe academic atmosphere.

At a press conference held at the Madhur Canteen, the student body called for an end to what it termed as “mob violence and administrative repression” continuing since August 5.

Their five demands include investigation and punishment for the attackers involved in assaults on hawkers, rickshaw-pullers, and student Abir Hasan, compensation for vandalism and return of seized goods, stating that no one, even if a DUCSU member, should be exempt from trial.

They demanded rehabilitation and alternative livelihoods for evicted hawkers and the floating population before any eviction drive, coordination between the university and the social welfare ministry for rehabilitation.

The alliance also urged a full investigation into drug syndicates and extortion networks allegedly operating within Shahbagh, New Market, and Lalbagh areas under administrative protection, and called for punishment of complicit officials.

It further demanded formulation of a ‘Safe Campus Charter’ through consultation among the DU administration, DUCSU, and other stakeholders to ensure a democratic and student-friendly academic environment among other demands.

Sami Abdullah, general secretary of the Revolutionary Students’ Unity Dhaka University unit, Muzammel Haque, convener of the Socialist Students’ Front DU unit, and Maeen Ahmed of the Bangladesh Students’ Union DU unit read out the written statement.
