Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, detained an activist of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the Awamil League, and handed him over to the police.
The BCL activist was detained as he came to attend his viva voce at Rajshahi College on Tuesday.
The detained is Mazharul Islam Ashiq, a third-year history department student of the college.
Witnesses said that JCD activists questioned Ashiq on Tuesday morning when he came to attend his scheduled viva voce at the college.
The JCD men then checked past photos from campus events and identified Ashiq as an active participant in several BCL rallies during the AL government tenure, and handed him over to the police, they said.
Khalid Bin Walid Abir, convener of Rajshahi College unit of Chhatra Dal, however, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Ashiq was a close associate of Rajshahi College unit BCL former president Rashik Dutta.
‘We have detained Ashiq and handed him over to the police, suspecting that he may have come to the college to carry out subversive activities,’ he said.
Contacted, professor Md Kamal Hossain, former chair of the Rajshahi College history department, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a friend of Ashiq came to meet him a few days ago to know how Ashiq could attend the viva voce in jail.
‘I came to know from the department teachers that the student was recently freed from the jail on bail and participated in the viva voce on Monday,’ he added.
Mostak Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the Boalia model police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Ashiq was not named in any case filed with the police station.
‘As Ashiq was found accused in a case filed earlier with the police station over an incident at Rajshahi College, he was shown arrested in the case and sent to jail through a court,’ he added.
