Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts will organise Sharot Utsab 1432 at the University’s Bakultala on October 16.

The faculty will organize the event in collaboration with the university’s music and dance departments and the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, said a press release issued by the faculty on Saturday.

It said that the faculty, since its inception, has nurtured the country’s artistic and cultural values and allowed various cultural groups to use its premises for seasonal festivals.

Following that practice, Satyen Sen Shilpigoshthi had sought permission to hold Sharot Utsab at Bakultala, which was initially approved, it said.

However, the Anti-Fascist Writers, Journalists and Artists’ Society lodged a written complaint on October 9, alleging that one of the organisers was linked to fascist activities.

Posters branding the organisers as collaborators of the previous fascist regime were also put up at the faculty gate, the release said.

It added that the allegations and related information, including photos of controversial activities during the previous regime, sparked resentment among students and cultural activists who took part in the 2024 mass uprising.

To avoid unwanted incidents, the event was suspended immediately, it said.

Following a meeting chaired by the dean on Saturday, the faculty found that the organisers had concealed information while applying for permission.

After reviewing their controversial record during the previous regime, the permission was revoked, the release added.
